Silicon Dioxide

Why it is included?

Silicon Dioxide is selected because of its of its energy reflection and absorption properties.

A Little Science

Silicon dioxide dates back to before the world was formed.  The earliest skeletons contain silicon dioxide.  Plants also use silicon dioxide for support structures.  The first time silicon dioxide was used by man was when the Romans used it to strengthen concrete.  Silicon dioxide has piezoelectric properties.  These properties allow the mineral to convert mechanical force into electrical energy. Silicon dioxide is also found to have light absorption properties (which is why it can be found in some cosmetics).  These piezoelectric and absorption properties are what allow silicon, at a nanoparticle level, to convert energy and reflect it back.
